Language access project
The California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS) is testing if generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can make high-quality translations faster.
The opportunity
Almost 20% of Californians have limited English proficiency. Translating content into their preferred languages improves their access to benefits and services. It also makes for a better customer experience.
Translating and adapting content costs a lot of money. It also takes a long time and a lot of work. This creates a barrier to serving all Californians.
How we’re exploring GenAI
CalHHS is testing how well GenAI can deliver translations:
- Faster
- More efficiently
- More consistently
- With better cultural awareness
The project also explores what a GenAI translation workflow looks like. It includes human review and editing to create high-quality translations.
